Iran's supreme court quashed the sentences against four policeman who faced death by stoning for belonging to a gang that kidnapped and raped girls. However, it was reported that while the men had escaped the usual Iranian penalty for adultery, the case was being referred to another court which could decide to hang them on charges of rape and sexual abuse. The four men were members of gang which operated in the northeastern city of Mashhad. Another nine had already been hanged for kidnapping and sex attacks.
