IRAQ. TOWARDS ADHESION TO THE INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT

the Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi announced the intent to adhere to the International Criminal Court, stated the Italian NGO ‘No Peace Without Justice’. Allawi made clear the intent following the announcement of the results of the first democratic elections following the ousting of Saddam Hussein. The International Criminal Court does not resort to the death penalty as punishment. 
“It is important that a country which lives in such a situation of instability wants to adhere to an institution which promotes the highest standards of international justice,” stated No Peace Without Justice.
“Of particular relevance are the words pronounced by the Prime Minister which define the Statute as representing humanity’s common values”.
