It is dangerous to pull out the card of the reintroduction of the death penalty more than ten years after the capital punishment was abolished by the then Czechoslovak parliament, Zemske Noviny (ZN) member Josef Petru wrote in the daily newspaper Pravo. Alluding to a televised debate on November 5, the politician said two rivals in the forthcoming Senate elections, Petr Stepanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) and Miroslav Slouf (Social Democrats, CSSD) tried to score points by admitting that the death penalty could be reintroduced to handle the most serious category of criminals.
