It was learned that a Japanese man in his 60s was sentenced to death at a district court in Shenyang, north-eastern China, earlier in the month, on charges of trying to smuggle drugs to Japan. The man, now held in custody in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, was the first Japanese to receive the death sentence without suspension in China, according to the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Division for the Protection of Japanese Nationals Overseas. He had appealed to a higher court, informed sources said. If his death penalty was finalized, he would most likely be the first Japanese to be executed overseas.
