It was reported that U.S. state and county officials wanted the federal government to change its extradition treaty with Mexico so that 60 murder suspects who could face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted in California would be returned to the U.S. State Representative Howard McKeon, District Attorney Steve Cooley and Sheriff Lee Baca asked President Bush to renegotiate the treaty. Mexico's Supreme Court forbids the extradition of any person facing a sentence of life imprisonment or death, McKeon said, adding that Mexico had become a fugitive paradise for murder suspects.
