Mexican President Vicente Fox said that he is against the death penalty and the referendum for its restoration called by two Mexican political parties in Mexico state
Mexican President Vicente Fox said that he is against the death penalty and the referendum for its restoration called by two Mexican political parties in Mexico state.
"That does not solve the crime problem. What solves it is an efficient job done by police. What they are promoting seems like a mistake to me," said Fox during a visit to Ciudad Satelite, west of the capital.
The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) and the Mexican Green Ecologist Party (PVEM) organized a referendum at the polls and by telephone to get an idea of public opinion on the possible restoration of capital punishment for very serious crimes. The parties justified the political initiative, which was awaiting a final recount, claiming they needed to know the opinion of the people concerning applying more severe measures against criminal offenders.
The question posed was on the advisability of giving death penalty and life imprisonment sentences to criminals guilty of murder, kidnapping or other violent crimes.
Non-governmental human rights organizations criticized the initiative, calling it social regression and contrary to Mexico's commitments with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the United Nations.
Capital punishment is included in Article 22 of the Mexican constitution for cases of national treason, parricide, aggravated homicide and other crimes, but not in the penal codes of the 32 Mexican states.
