Jamaica has too many "questionable police shootings" and the government of the northern Caribbean island is doing too little to punish the officers involved, said Asma Jahangir, UN special rapporteur on extra-judicial, summary or arbitrary executions. Jahangir, a lawyer with the U.N. Commission on Human Rights who ended a 10-day fact-findin g mission in the country, told a news conference that allegations of police carrying out contract killings may be true. "In a number of cases, there are strong indications that these reports might be accurate," said Jahangir. The visit was in response to concerns by local and international human rights organizations about police excesses, including extra-judicial killings.
