The Harris County jury that convicted Tarus V. Sales last week of capital murder deliberated over 3 days before handing down the death sentence Saturday morning in state District Judge Mike Wilkinson's court.
Sales was accused of ordering his friends William Herschel Ostine and Cheryl Kissentaner to kill security guard Tyrone Butler, 33, after Butler witnessed a shootout in February 2000.
On July 21, 2000, Ostine fatally shot Butler.
A retaliation charge is pending against Kissentaner. Ostine has been charged with capital murder.
