Jamaica's Opposition leader Edward Seaga described the proposed Caribbean Court of Justice as a "kangaroo court" which would be used by the government to violate human rights. Seaga told journalists that the government was attempting to use the controversial ruling by the Privy Council, which commuted the death sentences of six condemned men and made it more difficult to hang murderers, as a "smokescreen" to introduce the regional court. Seaga's opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) objected [to the regional court] and demanded that the Jamaican government put the matter to a referendum before a final decision is made.
