Two men sentenced to hang in Bridgetown's Glendairy Prison, Barbados, September 21, received a stay of execution.
Lennox Ricardo Boyce, 28, and Jeffery Joseph, 29, had been sentenced to death for the 1999 murder of 22-year-old Marquelle Hippolyte but September 17 their lawyers petitioned for a stay of execution until the court decided whether their constitutional rights had been breached. The hearing was scheduled for 29 September.
Boyce and Joseph told the court that they had a right to be heard by the Mercy Committee and the Inter-American Human Rights Committee.
The announcement of their scheduled execution followed a ruling by the London-based Privy Council in July, which reversed a previous judgment that the death penalty was unconstitutional, removing any legal impediments barring the country from carrying out hangings.
