Jeremy Sheets, has been released from Nebraska's death row. Prosecutors dropped the charges against him. On May 15, 2001, the Supreme Court has decided not to review the case. The Nebraska Supreme Court ordered a new trial for Jeremy Sheets last year, ruling that the key evidence again him - a co-defendant's taped statement - shouldn't have been used because the co-defendant killed himself after making it and could not be cross-examined at trial. Without the tape, prosecutor Jim Jansen said he doesn't have enough evidence to pursue a new trial with any hope of winning a conviction. " Sheets, 27, was convicted in 1997 of kidnapping, raping and killing 17-year-old Kenyatta Bush in 1992 because she was black.
