Jiang Wei and Du Shaolin were executed after being sentenced to death by the Henan Provincial Higher People's Court. The court had found that the two had been paid 50,000 yuan by Cao Guangjie, deputy head of Qilihe Village in the Nancao Township of Zhengzhou City, capital of central China's Henan Province, to kill fellow villager Cao Jianwei and his mother Wei Guoying, on 21 March 1999. Cao Jianwei was likely to be elected deputy head of Qilihe Village to replace Cao Guangjie. The two went into hiding after committing the crime. Cao Guangjie, who masterminded the murder, committed suicide in Jingjiang City, east China's Jiangsu Province, on 30 June 1999.
