Jimmy Dale Bland, a terminally ill death row inmate, was executed at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary, after his final appeal for a reprieve was denied by the US Supreme Court. Bland died at 6:19 pm. Bland, 49, white, was sentenced to death for the Nov. 14, 1996, murder of Doyle Windle Rains, 62. Bland had killed another man, Raymond Prentice, in 1975. Bland spent 20 years of a 60-year sentence in jail after pleading guilty to manslaughter and kidnapping charges in Prentice's death. He had been out of prison less than a year when he was accused of killing Rains. Bland's attorney had asked the US Supreme Court for the execution to be blocked because the 49-year-old was terminally ill with advanced lung cancer and doctors said he had as little as 6 months to live. The court rejected the request earlier today. Bland becomes the 2nd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Oklahoma, the 27th in the USA, and the 1084th overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
