John Lionel Neal who twice received the death sentence, has had his sentence changed to life in prison without parole after being ruled mentally disabled. Baldwin County Circuit Judge James H. Reid changed the sentence for Neal, now 43, because of his declared mental disability, acting on the recommendations of his defense lawyers and state Attorney General Troy King. In response, Neal's attorneys agreed to drop all appeals. Neal was arrested in in May 1987 and charged with killing Wilma Underwood, 77, during the burglary of her home on Feb. 16, 1987. He was sentenced to death in 1990, but the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals overturned his conviction because of jury selection problems. He was convicted a second time in 1994 and again sentenced to death.
