Joseph Williams, 30, has been sentenced to death by a Chatham County Superior Court jury for killing a fellow inmate, Michael Deal, 54

Joseph Williams, 30, has been sentenced to death by a Chatham County Superior Court jury for killing a fellow inmate, Michael Deal, 54. Deal's body was found hanging in his cell on July 26, 2001. Williams had pleaded guilty to murdering Deal on Monday. Williams is already serving three life sentences for 2 other murders. Prosecutors say Joseph, along with another inmate, Leon McKinney, killed Dealbecause they were worried he would tell authorities about their plan to escape. Deal, a former Richmond Hill officer and one-time acting police chief in Thunderbolt, was in in the Chatham County jail for failing to pay child support. McKinney is awaiting trial.
