Judge Haq Nawaz Balooch of Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC)-V in Karachi, sentenced defendants Kashif Aziz and Zahir to death on two counts under different sections of the Anti Terrorism Act. They were charged with killing a policeman and injuring two others in the Saudabad area of Karachi on 13 January 2003. It was alleged that police had found illegal weapons in their car during a search, arrested the suspects and took them to Saudabad police station. As the accused got out from the police vehicle escorting them, one of them hurled a hidden grenade towards an armoured car whilst another one snatched a sub machine gun from a policeman and opened fire killing police constable Mehboob Ali and injuring two others. The convicts fled but were rearrested on 3 April 2003 in Orangi.
