security guards Richard Maeta, Elias Shikuku Wanjala and Peter Mulati Wafula were sentenced to death for violently robbing novelist Ngugi wa Thiong’o and his wife.
John Kiragu Chege, a nephew of the writer, was acquitted for lack of evidence. Mulati was also separately convicted for sodomizing Njeeri, wife of Ngugi on the night of August 11, 2004. In a judgement of over 200 typed pages, judge Oseko convicted the former security guards of attacking the Ngugis and subjecting them to a harrowing experience by burning the professor with cigarette butts before making off with cash and a laptop.
