Kenyan prisons abandoned the kunguru - the old prison uniform in use for over a century - for more fashionable attire. Men will wear long trousers and shirts topped with a rounded cap, while women will have dresses, skirts and headscarves. From Independence to date, convicted male prisoners had worn white cotton shorts and shirts to match. To completely dehumanise them, the colonial regime made sure the kunguru had no zip and was tied round the waist. Woe unto you if the strap snapped. Lately, remand prisoners have been allowed to wear their own clothes but those facing capital punishment (robbery, murder and treason) wear cotton grey shirts and shorts.Women remand prisoners wear white gowns while those on capital remand wear grey uniform. Now they will spot a full dress or a skirt and a blouse.
