Khadijeh Shahla Jahed, the mistress of an Iranian football star, was sentenced to death for murdering the wife of her lover.
After a one week closed-door trial, Shahla Jahed was found guilty of the 2002 stabbing of Laleh Saharkhizan, the wife of former national soccer hero and top coach Nasser Mohammad Khani. Shahla Jahed had been his temporary wife, a practice approved of in the Islamic republic.
Their temporary marital status meant that Khani escaped any charges of adultery. In a practice unique to Shiite Islam, Muslim males in the Islamic republic can take on temporary wives for periods ranging from just a few hours to several decades.
Khani was, however, sentenced to 74 lashes after Judge Fakhreddin Jafarzadeh found him guilty of taking drugs with his mistress. Shahla Jahed too also faced lashes before her hanging after also being convicted of narcotics consumption.
"I will watch the hanging," Khani reportedly shouted after the death sentence was handed down against his ex-lover, who was sent into a fit of frenzied screaming when she learned she would go to the gallows. Arrested the day after the murder, Shahla Jahed had held her silence for 11 months, but later confessed. She then blamed "Satan" for the killing.
"Yes, I am guilty of loving Nasser," she screamed in the court house, demanding her trial be held in Azadi stadium, the 100,000-capacity home ground of the Persepolis club. The distraught mother of the victim reportedly shouted back that the killer should be hanged in the stadium.
