KUWAIT: SPIES' SENTENCES COMMUTED

Three men accused of spying for Iran had their death sentences commuted to life in prison by the Kuwaiti appeals court, officials said.
The accused -- two Iranian nationals and a Kuwaiti -- held positions in the Kuwaiti army at the time of their arrests in May 2010.
Islam Times newspaper said the convicts were all condemned to death in 2011 after the prosecution presented proof they had passed on sensitive information to Iran and conspired against Kuwait's interests.
Iran's denial of the allegations led to tense diplomatic relations and a recall on both sides of diplomats. Although both ambassadors returned to their respective posts in May 2011 tensions still run high.
Islam Times said the case will move forward to Kuwait's supreme court where a final verdict will be issued.
