Larry Eugene Hutcherson, 37, white, was executed by lethal injection for the killing of an 89-year-old woman.
Hutcherson apologized to the victim's family in a brief final statement and asked for forgiveness.
He was pronounced dead at 6:18 p.m.
Hutcherson was executed for the killing of Irma Thelma Gray, who was assaulted and had her throat cut on June 26, 1992 as she confronted Hutcherson around midnight burglarizing her house.
He was sentenced to death in 1993. The 1st conviction was overturned by the Alabama Supreme Court, which ruled that DNA evidence had been presented without proper procedures. He pleaded guilty to capital murder in 1996, and a Mobile County jury recommended the death penalty by an 11-1 vote. Hutcherson has since decided not to file a petition for clemency for the governor’s consideration.
Hutcherson becomes the 1st condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Alabama, the 49th in the USA and the 1053rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
