Lawyers Centre for Legal Assistance (LAWCLA) condemned President Kabbah's reluctance in implementing the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) relating to the abolition of the death penalty in Sierra Leone. LAWCLA said the application of the death penalty was a direct contravention of Section 20 of the 1991 Constitution of Sierra Leone providing that no one shall be subject to any treatment that is inhuman or degrading. 
"The application of the death penalty has never shown to deter crime more than other forms of punishment," the release stated, adding that government should initiate measures geared towards the abolition of the death penalty.
