Portugal's Supreme Court allowed the extradition of Abu Salem

Portugal's Supreme Court allowed the extradition of Abu Salem, the main accused in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, to India. The Supreme Court, while deciding on petition filed respectively by Salem and India's federal agency Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) through the Portuguese prosecutor general, ruled that Salem could be extradited to India for his trial in major offences. 
The Portugese High court had earlier allowed extradition of Salem for trial only in minor offences which included forging a passport and extortion. India had already given an assurance to the Portuguese Government that Salem would not be awarded the death penalty paving way for his extradition as European law prohibited extradition of any accused to a country with capital punishment.
