Lawyers for accused Bali bomber Amrozi made a last-ditch plea to spare him from the firing squad, arguing that the death penalty is a vengeful punishment not acceptable in many countries, including Australia. "Other countries have one by one completely removed the death sentence, including Australia," Amrozi's lawyer Wirawan Adnan told the court in his final address before judgment day. Mr Adnan submitted that the prosecution had failed to prove Amrozi was a mastermind or planner of the October 12 attack which killed 202 people, including 88 Australians. Outside court he conceded that while he believed the prosecution had failed to prove the case, his gut feeling was that the judges had already convicted his client. "I don't think the verdict is going to be based on a fair trial or what has happened in court," Mr Adnan said, adding that the Bali trial was a show for the media "to impress the international viewer".
