lawyers for Daso Adamu, a Nigerian mother sentenced to death by stoning for having sex out of wedlock, told an appeal court that her confession was not given voluntarily. Wearing a traditional Muslim headscarf, 26-year-old Adamu appeared in the court in the northern Bauchi state with a six-month-old baby strapped to her back.
"The trial judge erred in law when he relied on the purported confession of the appellant when the confession was not voluntary," Adamu's defence counsel Abdulkadir Suleman told the Upper Sharia Court in the town of Ningi.
Adamu had previously confessed to having sex out of wedlock with a man 12 times. The man was released for lack of evidence.
