two Nigerian Muslim women sentenced to death by stoning for having sex outside wedlock appealed their conviction by lower Sharia courts in northeastern Bauchi state, rights campaigners said.
Hajara Ibrahim, a 29-year-old woman, was convicted by an Islamic court in Tafawa Balewa district early this month, after she confessed to having sex with a man and becoming pregnant.
The other woman, a 26-year-old nursing mother Daso Adamu, was sentenced by a court in Ningi district in September, after she admitted to having sex 12 times with a man.
Rose Musa, programme officer of the women's rights group Baobab, said the man was Adamu's former husband who returned to her when her new husband absconded.
The lower courts acquitted Ibrahim and Adamu's lovers for lack of prosecuting evidence.
"We are optimistic that these women will be discharged and acquitted," Musa said.
