Leroy Orange, exonerated from Illinois' death row, intervened at the UN Commission on Human Rights on behalf of the Transational Radical Party. "Together with Hands Off Cain we seek a UN moratorium on executions," said Orange.
"I spent 19 years on death row for a crime I did not commit. I was imprisoned in Illinois, the first US state to impose a legal moratorium on executions.
In the United States, cases of innocent death row inmates like myself who were saved at the last minute has provided the basis for deep re-thinking of the death penalty. The death penalty has two faces: one in the international spotlight and the other hidden from view. The US death penalty system and its flaws have been highly publicised.
On the other hand, the death penalty in dictatorial regimes such as China, Cuba, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia is shrouded by secrecy and generally ignored. It is time for us to recognise that this is a global problem that requires a global response.
I ask the distinguished representatives to support the resolution calling for a moratorium on the death penalty to be introduced by Greece on behalf of the EU. I appeal to you to ensure that a moratorium applies not only to the citizens of Illinois like myself, but to all inmates who face the death penalty around the world."
