Libyan authorities executed Emad Abdul Wahed, an Egyptian citizen, as well as a Libyan national, convicted of murder in 1995. Wahed had been on death row since 2005. Aid Nasser Amin, head of the Egyptian Centre for Judicial Independence, said Libyan authorities notified the Egyptian Consulate in Libya of the execution. Libyan Authorities contacted the Emad family via the el-Marg police station commissioner to ask if they wanted Emad’s body buried in Libya or extradited to Egypt. The Libyan authorities also allowed Emad to telephone his family one last time to say good bye and inform them of his will. Amin called on Egyptian businessmen to quickly intervene and said “we hope to resolve the issue of 11 other Egyptians on death row, whose execution could be prevented by paying blood money.” Amin sent a letter to the Egyptian-Libyan relations coordinator, Ahmed Kazaf el-Dam, pleading for a stay of execution, adding that the letter was sent to the Libyan Foreign Minister, but apparently too late. In addition to the 23 Egyptians, at least 15 other foreign nationals were reported to be on death row in Libya, including one Ghanaian, eight Algerians and six Nigerians. Most of them were convicted of murder.
