Luther Jerome Williams, 47, was executed by lethal injection this evening at Holman Correctional Facility near Atmore.
He was pronounced dead at 6:21 p.m.
Williams was convicted in 1989 for the Jan. 23, 1988, murder and robbery of John Kirk.
Williams professed his innocence to the end. When asked for his final words, he said authorities convinced his 2 accomplices, one of whom shot Kirk, to pin the murder on him. The two others convicted in the murder received life sentences. Trosky Eric Gregory, 43, was paroled in 2005. Albert Carmichael Jr., 45, was paroled in 2004.
Williams willed his personal belongings - a box of legal papers, a check for $38.97 and a television set - to his son.
Williams becomes the 3rd condemned inmate to be put to death this year in Alabama, the 36th in the USA and the 1093rd overall since the nation resumed executions on January 17, 1977.
