Major Chalermchai Majchaklam of the Supreme Command was sentenced to death for conspiracy to commit first degree murder. The Criminal Court found Chalermchai guilty of involvement in the murder of Yasothon governor Preena Lipattanaphan in 2001, citing forensic evidence and his own sketch of the crime scene. The death sentence was handed down even though prosecutors were unable to establish a motive. The court said in its verdict that evidence indicated beyond reasonable doubt that Chalermchai was at the centre of the murder conspiracy, even though it remained unclear as to why he wanted to kill Preena.
