Mexican Army activity in the conflictive southern state of Chiapas is intense and the reported withdrawal of soldiers has only taken place in highly visible areas, an Amnesty International official has told EFE.Robert Knox, the human rights organization's representative for Mexico, made the claims following a visit to Chiapas and the neighbouring states of Guerrero and Oaxaca as part of a tour to study the rights situation in the region. In the three states which he visited, Knox said that torture and summary executions by the security forces still occur, human rights activists are persecuted as "political agitators" and that the army hassles rural communities. Knox also complained that the army protected violators of human rights and most cases which are reported are not even investigated.
