Azhar Che Wil, an officer of Penor Prison, was sentenced to death by the High Court in Kauntan, Malaysia, for the murder of a 19-year-old detainee. Azhar, 33, was found guilty of assaulting Mohd Shukri Mohd Yusof on March 1, 2004. Shukri died at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital nine days later without regaining consciousness.
High Court judge Justice Mohamed Apandi Ali said that Shukri’s death was due to trauma from the injuries he sustained.
He said the multiple injuries were consistent with that of a blunt surface such as a cement floor or wall of the prison security room where Shukri was detained.
“Prison warder Razali Fauzi testified that he saw Azhar kick and step on the deceased several times on the head and body,” he added. “The eyewitness also testified that Azhar had banged the deceased’s head against the cement wall and stepped on him on the cement floor.”
