MALDIVES: PRESIDENT SPEAKS OUT AGAINST DEATH PENALTY

President Mohamed Nasheed said neither amputation nor the death penalty should be practiced in the Maldives. In his weekly radio address, Nasheed spoke about the revised penal code sent for further review by parliament.

In his weekly radio address, Nasheed spoke about the revised penal code sent for further review by parliament. “A life could only be taken in a sentence enforced after a very fair trial... I don’t believe the Maldivian justice system has the capability to pass judgements that fairly.”
