Mali's outgoing president pardoned former dictator Moussa Traore and his wife Mariam, who were imprisoned after he was overthrown in 1991 and were serving life sentences for murder and corruption.
An official statement released said President Alpha Oumar Konare freed the couple for humanitarian reasons. Traore, 65, was condemned to death in 1993 on charges of murder related to the killing of over 150 pro-democracy protesters in the days before his fall. Both he and his wife were sentenced to death for economic crimes in 1999. The sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.
