Many senior officials of the Kolkata and West Bengal police welcomed the stringent Prevention of Organised Crime Ordinance. They said that the introduction of the Ordinance would give law-enforcers a much-needed edge to combat organised crime.
The state Cabinet on October 22 approved the Ordinance with the provision of death sentence or life imprisonment as the maximum punishment for persons convicted for anti-national and subversive activities and organised crime.
