Mary Jane Ramos, a Filipino domestic helper, was saved from execution in a decision issued by the Ras Al Khaima court. She arrived in the UAE on Jan. 21, 1999. Two days after her arrival, she was employed by Mohammad Al Shams as a domestic helper. It was also on that same day that she reportedly stabbed to death her employer who attempted to rape her. Upon direct instructions from President Estrada, the Philippine Embassy in Dubai engaged the services of a battery of lawyers who argued Ramos' case before the Islamic court. President Estrada had told Philippine embassy officials in Dubai to exhaust whatever funds are necessary from the legal aid program of the Department of Foreign Affairs to make sure the defense lawyers could prove the innocence of Ramos.If there is no appeal from the prosecution within 15 days from the lower courts decision, Ramos can be repatriated to the Philippines.
