MEP, Nelly Maes announced in a press statement that she would not take part in a meeting on 5 March at the European Parliament on the theme of "Dialogue between Civilisations, Women's empowerment" because President Khatami's advisor, Kahra Shojaii, who advocates stoning in Iran, would be attending. Ms Maes declared that the "European Parliament must not host those who advocate medieval punishments such as stoning ".
