Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shahidul Islam handed down the death sentence to Mohammad Monir Hossain Liton, 21 and Mohammad Abu Sayeed, 20 who were on the dock, quiet and unnerved for killing Shihab, a schoolboy, in the city on February 7, 2001.Mohammad Faisal Sharif Raju, 21 and Mohammad Imran Hossain Sabuj, 21 were convicted in absentia and awarded death penalty. Two other accused Mahbubul Haq Rubel and Nasim Sheikh, who remain fugitives, were acquitted.The verdict in the sensational murder case came in the afternoon in a jam-packed court. Hearing of the death penalty for her son, Liton's mother burst into tears.Shihab, a student of Class VII of Khilgaon Model School, was kidnapped on returning home from the school for a ransom of Tk 20 lakh from his father Khandokar Dilder Hossain, a businessman.Shihab was taken to a club at Goran and before securing the ransom the accused hacked him to death, his body was cut into pieces and thrown at different places in sacks. Both Monir Hossain and Abu Sayed had admitted their guilt in statement before the metropolitan magistrate. The trial was completed speedily in 27 working days of the court.
