The High Court confirmed the death sentence given to three policemen for rape and murder. Moinul Huq, Abdus Sattar and Amritalal Barman were convicted and sentenced to death for the rape and murder of Yasmin, in Dinajpur on August 31, 1997.
Deputy Attorney General Shamsuddin Ahmed Manik who conducted the case for the state said the police had tried, successfully to some extent, to destroy the exhibits in the Yasmin murder case. However, they could not suppress or destroy everything as different quarters were alert, he added.
The case involved the rape and murder of a girl from Dinajpur, Yasmin, who used to work in Dhaka as a maid. On the night of 24-8-95, she had left Dhaka for Dinajpur to see her mother, but boarded the wrong bus by mistake. She had disembarked from the bus and was picked up by the three policemen, who had said they would send her safely to her home. They took Yasmin on their van but raped her and killed her and left the body by roadside. The three policemen then informed their police station that the victim had jumped from their van and died.
But the people of Dinajpur did not believe the statement of police and started a movement which claimed the lives of seven protesters following police firing on the mob.
