Mexican President Vicente Fox welcomed the decision by the governor of Oklahoma Brad Henry commuting the death sentence of Mexican citizen Osvaldo Torres who had been scheduled to die next on May 18 for the murders of a man and woman during a burglary.
"We are pleased that this happened in this manner," Fox told reporters in Poland, where he was on an official visit.
The Mexican president also suggested that the commuting of Torres' death sentence could establish a precedent for some 50 other Mexicans on death row in US prisons.
The commutation came after an appeals court temporarily stayed the execution so that it could hear arguments that Torres had not been advised after his arrest of his right to counsel by the Mexican Consulate.
