Miss Peru, Marina Mora, will use the opportunity of participating in the Miss World competition in Nigeria to press for the rights of Amina Lawal. Jessica Newton, Mora's spokesperson, said that Miss Peru would not join a number of other contenders who withdrew from the pageant in protest. "We have told the organizers that we will participate, but Miss Peru will insist from the stage on respect for Ms. Lawal's rights," she said. Newton criticized the attitude of Nigeria's rulers toward the sentence imposed on Amina Lawal, 31, who was condemned to death by stoning after giving birth to a child out of wedlock. "We respect all religions, provided that they endorse human life, and we oppose any activity or coercion against human life," said Newton, a former Miss Peru.
