Morocco's King Mohammed pardoned 854 prisoners on the eve of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha, the official MAP news agency said.
The monarch commuted the life sentences of two prisoners to limited sentences as part of the royal measure, which is traditional in Morocco at religious holidays such as the Eid.
MAP did not identify names of pardoned inmates not did it say whether political activists were among those to benefit.
Some 40 prisoners have been sentenced to death in Morocco in recent years, including five Muslim activists of Moroccan and Algerian origin who were involved in arms smuggling and other crimes, human right groups say.
