Mozambique's police force denied a newspaper report that it has carried out "summary executions" or that it runs a "death squad".
A report by the news organ "Vertical" had cited over 20 residents living near to a motor circuit as saying that they heard gunshots after unmarked police vehicles had arrived in the vicinity.
Maputo police spokesman Abilio Quive told reporters that the newspaper report was aimed at "slandering the police and the nation" and that the allegations had a "negative impact" on Mozambique.
Quive said he was not aware of any official action being taken against "Vertical", although he complained that some of its journalists had displayed a lack of professional ethics.
