Muhammad Rafiq, 27, was hanged in new Central Jail in Multan, Pakistan, for the murder of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the police force. The punishment was executed in the presence of Special Judicial Magistrate Naveed Alam Bukhari, Jail Superintendent Zia-ullah and Dr Waheed Siddiqui, Medical Officer. His body was later handed over to his parents. According to details, Rafiq of Nihalaywala village, a suburb of Multan, had developed illicit relations with a woman and both used to meet secretly.
On February 25, 1997, the woman's relatives informed the Alpa Police. When police under the supervision of ASI Sajjad Ahmed reached the premises, Rafiq reportedly started firing at the authorities and made an attempt to escape. ASI Sajjad sustained serious injuries during the ensuing chase and later died in hospital. Rafiq was arrested two days after the incident. He was sentenced to death by a Sessions Court and had the judgment upheld by a higher court.
In a separate case, Anwar Habib, was hanged in Central Prison, Sahiwal, after being convicted of murder. No further details of the case were reported.
