BANGLADESH. SIX PERSONS SENTENCED TO DEATH

six people were sentenced to death in Bangladesh, in three separate cases. Four men were sentenced to death in Dhaka for the murder of police officer Mizanur Rahman in January 2004.
Ram Chandra Biswas, Ukil Biswas, Mojibar and Mohammad were handed down the death penalty by speedy trial tribunal judge Mohammad Firoz Alam in a crowded court. They broke down after hearing the verdict. The prosecution said that Rahman, along with a contingent of the police force, raided a house where terrorists were allegedly preparing to go out on a mission. As he entered the house the men opened fire killing Rahman on the spot. After the arrests the convicts made confessional statements to the police admitting their guilt.
In another case, a man named Arif was sentenced to death in absentia and three others were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Anis at Mirpur in October 2003.
Anis was shot and fatally wounded due to previous enmity when he was returning home from his workplace. He died on the way to hospital. Masud, who was sentenced to life imprisonment, was present in the dock. Two other lifers, Jewel and Kajol, remained fugitive.
Another report from Kishoreganj said the district and sessions judge sentenced to death Abdul Alim for murdering a woman and her maternal uncle near Sholakia Hazrat Abdul Quader Zilani khanka sharif in July 2003.
According to the prosecution, Abdul Alim stabbed Happy Akhter following a quarrel at about 8pm on July 3, 2003. He also stabbed her maternal uncle Anwar as he tried to save Happy who died on the spot. Anwar succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
