Muhubuer Zhumabayi, a 27-year-old Kazak national, was sentenced to death by the Intermediate People's Court in Xian, capital of northwest China's Shaanxi Province, after being convicted of killing a fellow villager with a knife on 6 July 2003. It was alleged that Zhumabayi stabbed the victim during a quarrel in a restaurant in Xian after both of them were released from a drug rehabilitation clinic that day. He was arrested on 31 July after going into hiding. The court said the killer was a thief and a drug abuser in Xian. He was diagnosed with HIV during rehabilitation.
