Newcastle Law School lecturer James Sweeney argued that capital punishment doesn't act as a deterrent in preventing crimes. "When people commit these crimes, like murder and paedophilia, punishment is not what's on their minds," Sweeney said. "The courts from time to time get it wrong and with capital punishment there is absolutely no way back to put it right," he added.
