Nguyen Thanh Hai was granted compensation of approximately 8,000 euros by the Vietnamese Supreme Court. Hai, arrested in 2002 for the rape and murder of a woman in My Tho, was sentenced to death by the people’s tribunal in Tien Giang. The sentence was then confirmed by the Supreme Court. Some months later, the same court accepted an appeal but rejected it due to insufficient proof. However, on June 15, 2007, the police in Tien Giang decided to abandon the case for lack of proof. Hai was granted the compensation and an apology from the Supreme Court by Judge Nguyen Xuan Phat, in front of the people of My Tho.
