Nguyen Van Tien, a 21-year-old Vietnamese man, was sentenced to death by firing squad after being convicted of murdering and robbing a woman to fund the purchase of a fighting cock.
The Tay Ninh People's Court found Tien, a silversmith, guilty of stabbing to death on 24 September 2003 a frequent customer to the jewellery shop that he worked for.
Tien told the court he had killed her because he needed money to fulfil his dream of buying a fighting cock. He was, however, arrested a day later.
