Niaz Ahmed, a Muslim, was sentenced to death in Pakistan for insulting Islam's Prophet Mohammad. The man was charged under a blasphemy law denounced by rights groups and minorities.
Police said Niaz Ahmed was convicted of using "abusive language" against Mohammad in front of several people in the town of Bahawalnagar in central Punjab province in July.
"He has been sentenced on the basis of accounts of the witnesses," police official Mohammad Anwar told Reuters.
Courts have in the past handed down several death sentences for blasphemy under the law, which prescribes the death penalty for insulting Mohammad, other prophets and holy books.
Most convictions were thrown out on appeal to higher courts, but several Christians and Muslims accused of blasphemy were killed by religious fanatics inside prisons or police stations.
Non-Muslim minority communities and rights groups urged the government to repeal the law, saying it had been used to settle personal scores.
Hardline religious groups said they would resist any move to abolish the law.
